Arsenal Transfer Rumors: Fabian Schar Needs to be Priority
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal transfer rumors are a dime a dozen. We’re linked to just about every other player in European football. Recent rumors have linked us to defenders worldwide, including the would-be-retired Diego Lugano, Joseph Yobo and Mario Yepes.
Chris Smalling has also popped up on the radar as of late, but it’s the reemergence of the Fabian Schar rumors that has me excited.
It just makes sense to get someone who can be groomed as a replacement and fill in as is.
Schar is a young center back that plays in Switzerland for FC Basel. However, in last year’s Champions League matchups against Chelsea, Schar looked absolutely stoic and gave the Blues a significant amount of trouble.
At 6’1″ and 187 pounds, Schar is the spitting physical image of Laurent Kocielny. He’s got the pace to match and the physicality as well. I doubt you could find an Arsenal fan out there that wouldn’t want another Kocielny.
Supposedly, Schar is valued at somewhere between 5 and 10 million pounds by FC Basel, a price tag that wouldn’t even dent the budget that Arsenal have. In typical Wenger fashion, we’ve been looking at him for over a year, so perhaps he’s seen enough to finally pull the trigger on him in January.

He’s chock full of talent, he’s only 22 and he could be all the rage at center back. We’d be foolish to let him slip to Tottenham.
Eventually Per Mertesacker and Kocielny are going to start their decline, they aren’t young anymore. Sure, we have a lot of prospects like Isaac Hayden, but we’re already thin at center back, so it just makes sense to get someone who can be groomed as a replacement and fill in as is. Fabian Schar fits both needs.
