Premier League: An Arsenal-Centric Review

So another weekend in the Premier League over, and it seemed to be one without too much fan-fare. A routine win away at Sunderland for Arsenal, Liverpool continued their stuttering start with a goalless draw at home to Hull and Southampton recorded a standard 1-0 victory against Stoke. There were a few upsets along the way, but it was a rather calm weekend with only one team (Everton) scoring 3 times, compared to the 5 (West Ham, Man City, Everton, Southampton and Liverpool) who scored 3 or more goals last weekend. So what were the big games for Arsenal fans this weekend?

Obviously the most important thing of a Premier League weekend is to make sure you get 3 points, and despite it coming from two mistakes we managed to return to Arsenal with all three points in hand. Also important was a clean sheet, given that Mertesacker has only just about turned up in the last few games. Sanchez again proved to be our Saviour, with Arsenal also reaching the milestone of 1,500 Premier League goals on his second strike. Arsenal are only behind Manchester United on this scoreboard.

For my money this was the performance of the weekend. It shows how strange the Premier League can be that West Ham were bottom, or as good as, at Christmastime last year yet now they find themselves 4th with 9 matches gone and no top 4 opposition until Boxing Day. Manchester City couldn’t break down the hard working East Londeners and Sakho became the first ever West Ham player to score in 6 Premier League matches on the bounce. It take points off Manchester City and keeps them within arms reach, which is so important at this time of year. Potential new gunner Winston Reid showed exactly why Arsenal are interested in him, with the New Zealand skipper keeping Dzeko, Aguero and Jovetic quiet for most of the game.

This game was good and bad for Arsenal in equal measure. It was important that Chelsea are reigned in because if they’re a long way ahead at Christmas then they will walk to the Premier League title. However seeing Van Persie score the equaliser in the dying embers of the game to reignite Manchester United’s confidence was not a good sight for any Arsenal fan. Still we are ahead of Manchester United and Liverpool and we closed the gap to City and Chelsea, which marks a pretty good weekend by my count!

P.S as mentioned in a previous article we should not focus on Spurs, but our North London rivals let a 1-0 lead slip to fall to Newcastle 2-1 at home. Perfect weekend!
