Arsenal Transfer Rumors: Mats Hummels Rumors Get Huge Boost
By Josh Sippie
January is fast approaching and Arsenal’s needs are well-documented. First and foremost, the need for a center back stands out, and there are few better in the world than the Gunner’s primary target: Mats Hummels.
Obviously such a move would be huge and completely un-Arsene-Wenger like, but there’s been some good news out of this department. Louis van Gaal and Manchester United have supposedly dropped off from the Hummels hunt and focused their attention instead on Ezequiel Garay (and Ronaldo, and Hulk, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic). This is fantastic news because it now stands that Arsenal are the only viable club in pursuit of Hummels.

Hummels has stated that in order to move to a new team, it would have to be a team that plays similar to Borussia Dortmund, and Arsenal fit that bill better than any club in the Premier League.
The original allotted funds that Arsene Wenger was given for January were rumored to be at around 20 million pounds, which would in no way be able to purchase a world-class defender like Mats Hummels. But now it’s being said that Wenger will have 42 million pounds, and that would indeed be enough to coax away the German star.
The ball is in Wenger’s courst (right where he likes it). We all know that Wenger could get as much funding as he wanted and sign just about anyone, but it’s always a question of being prudent with funds that aren’t his (it makes sense if you don’t think about it).
Hummels would be an epic signing, plain and simple, but no one needs to be told that. The back line is already stoic with Mertesacker and Kocienly teaming up, when healthy, but toss in Hummels and we’re rivaled by few (in name at least).
