Captain Mikel Arteta Slams Arsenal for “Throwing Game Away”

When you blow a 3-0 lead, it goes without saying that a lot of people are going to have a lot of harsh words and fingers will be pointing at every single outlet. So it comes as no surprise that El Capitan, Mikel Arteta, has taken to the media to slam his comrades performance against Anderlecht.

The elderly Spaniard had this to say to Sky Sports, as reported by Goal.com

"“I don’t know [what went wrong] but we can’t afford to make these mistakes and to concede three goals at 3-0 up. It’s just not good enough, we’re very disappointed. We missed a great opportunity to finish the job today and it’s not good.“We had a two-goal lead at home. We know what we’re playing for and it was a massive day for us today to finalise the group stages. We need to analyse the mistakes and what happened in the second half because it’s not at the level required for this club.“As well and the main aim [to top the group] when you start the competition, we’ve thrown everything away today. We have another two chances still but you can’t miss chances in the Champions League because every team has great quality and you can see what happened today.”"

As the captain of this enigmatic ship, Arteta holds probably about the most influence over the squad next to the omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, and omnivorous (maybe not that last one) Arsene Wenger (who looked smashing in his new, easy to zip jacket).

But words are just that – words. What’s going to change?

The simple fact of the matter is that Wenger does not change. I’ve been believing all season that we’re one good match away from turning the corner, but it’s beginning to look like I was wrong, that this is the Arsenal of the 2014/15 season. We’ll trounce Manchester City, get trounced by Borussia Dortmund and squeak by against Burnley and Anderlecht. This isn’t a trend that I’m enjoying.
