Arsenal Will Not Make Any Big Signings In January Window
By Josh Sippie
There are three major contributing factors as to why Arsene Wenger will not make any major signings this January and why we’re all fools to get our hopes up.
- 20 million pounds is a tiny transfer budget.
- Arsene Wenger never signs anyone in January (Kim Kallstrom?).
- By January, Giroud, Debuchy, Walcott and Kocielny will all (hopefully) be back and Ozil will be nearing a return.
With the return of all these injured players, we won’t need (according to Wenger) anything we’ve been praying for, save a holding midfielder, which we’ll never get. While it’s become painfully obvious that another string of injuries could dismantle this team again, I don’t foresee any signing outside of someone like Tyone Mings or Winston Reid. It’s just not Wenger’s style (if he has what can be considered “style”).
We were short on defenders already, with Wenger selling more defenders than he bought over the summer, so it makes sense that he could possibly throw some chump change at an average, young defenseman like Mings or Reid, but Hummels, Pique, even Vlaar are compeltely out of the question. I’m still rooting for Fabian Schar to come to Arsenal but again, I have to temper my expectations.

The first name on my wishlist is Grzegorz Krychowiak. The Polish international is exactly what we need. He’s roughly the size of three Flamini’s and he’s a defensive force on the pitch, while still being more than capable of contributing to the attack from the back.
However, I’m fully aware that paying 24 million pounds for a holding midfielder goes against everything Arsene Wenger has ever stood for and as such, will not happen. After all, we still have Flamini.
If Mings or Reid is all we get, I’ll have to force myself to be content knowing full well that one more injury will destroy us. Calum Chambers, as talented as he is and could end up being, is not enough cover at the back. Nor is Arteta or Flamini a holding midfielder. The ball’s in Arsene Wenger’s court, and I never like how that feels.
