Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil Proves Himself as a Real Standout Human Being
By Josh Sippie
Say what you will about Mesut Ozil’s play for Arsenal thus far into his tenure, one thing cannot be denied. Mesut Ozil is a standout human being. Playing football is one thing, but there are so many things greater than football in this world and Ozil reminded us all of that when he donated his $600,000 winnings from the World Cup towards helping 23 children get the surgery they needed in Brazil. This earned him the Laureus Charity Award.
He didn’t keep a single penny of his earnings.
All 23 surgeries were successful.
Now, Mesut Ozil has responded to a young fan’s postcard by inviting him to watch the German star play against Newcastle. Here’s the tweet:
If that doesn’t give you a warm and fuzzy, I don’t know what will. Everyone should automatically be rooting for Mesut Ozil now. Like I said, he may have skidded to a sputtering start for Arsenal, but there is more to life than football and Ozil is reminding us of that.
Even in his play, Ozil shows how selfless he is, rarely celebrating and going about business in a quiet, reserved fashion.
Shining on the pitch is one thing, but shining on the world stage and in your contributions to society, is another thing entirely. It’s a much bigger stage and a much more important one at that.
Let’s all take a moment to thank Mesut Ozil for all he’s done. Here’s to hoping he recovers soon and can get back to the pitch and doing what he loves.
