Could Mats Hummels Be On the Move In January?
After the poor defensive lapse against Liverpool let 2 points slip through our fingers, which by the way means that when we play West Ham on the 28th they will be above us, I really believe we need to sign a defensive leader to make sure our defence is at least organised rather than all over the place, and Mats Hummels is making unhappy noises at Dortmund right now.
Dortmund have struggled to replace the goals of Lewandowski after he left this summer and they find themselves in the relegation zone going into the Christmas break, despite qualifying above Arsenal in their Champions League group. And it appears Mats Hummels is reaching the end of his patience.
"“We’ve managed pretty well at home in recent weeks, but not at all away.“It’s pretty astonishing that we are so pathetic.”"
Somehow I don’t think these are the words of someone that is happy where they are, and the German defender has been linked with Arsenal in the past so what could be stopping the move?
Firstly, we’re not exactly the first team to be linked with him and nor are we the only team that desperately need a defender of Mats Hummel’s quality. Both Manchester United and Liverpool have made it quite apparent that they need a new central defender and they’ve previously proven that they will be prepared to throw money at the problem if that’s what it requires.

The one thing that we might have going for us against the two Northern clubs is that, apart from being based in London where most foreign players want to be, we are also most similar to Dortmund in regards to the clubs structure.
We will no doubt be facing stiff competition to sign the centre back but a combination of our club ethos and our current German contingent could be the decisive factor in making his mind up as to where he wants to move. I don’t necessarily think he will move in January, but if he moves to an English club he will most likely end up at Arsenal.
