Could Olivier Giroud Suspension Save Lukas Podolski’s Arsenal Career?

facebooktwitterreddit

In case you missed the news somehow, Olivier Giroud is facing a three-match ban following a head nudge against QPR. This leaves Arsenal in a bit of a pickle, as you can imagine, given the fantastic form Giroud had been in and the supposed lack of any other strikers. With Welbeck scuddling to start his Arsenal career and Yaya Sanogo still young an unreliable, that leaves us one name.

Lukas Podolski.

Why Podolski seems to fly under the radar baffles me. Maybe Wenger doesn’t like his attitude, but when the German plays, he plays well. He scores goals, he links up attacking play and no one can argue with the potency of his left foot.

He is a weapon in need of a chance, and with Giroud out, he should, barring more questionable moves by Arsene Wenger, be given that chance. And if I know anything about Podolski and what I’ve seen from him thus far, he is going to make the most of any opportunity handed to him.

Whether it’s his swan song for Arsenal on his way to Inter Milan or his redemption, we will just have to wait and see. We know what Podolski can do, it’s just a matter of keeping him motivated and prolonging that motivation. We have three games without Giroud, so we’ll need all hands on deck, especially from an offensive standpoint, to pull some needed points out of this stretch.

This is the last obstacle before the mass return of Mesut Ozil, Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey. Podolski is just the guy to tide us over.
