Should Arsene Wenger’s Policy on Cesc Fabregas, Alex Song be Admired or Scorned?

When the opportunity arose in the summer to get Cesc Fabregas back, I was on board. Sure, we had a surplus of midfielders, but this was Captain Fantastic, an absolute artist at midfield. Fabregas said that his first preference was Arsenal, but the Gunners didn’t want him. As a result, he’s now tearing up the pitch for Chelsea.

Arsene Wenger stayed the course and backed Mesut Ozil as the main man in the Arsenal midfield.

Now, Alex Song has come out and said that he would have loved a return to Arsenal as well, but much like Fabregas, he wasn’t wanted.

Song told reporters (according to ESPNFC):

"I would have loved to have gone back, but they didn’t want to do it. That’s life. I don’t blame them. Cesc Fabregas also hoped to return to Arsenal, but they didn’t exercise their option to re-sign him. It’s suprising when you see what he is doing for Chelsea. He is stronger than he was before."

But perhaps Song’s rejection comes down to his reason for leaving, as he said himself, “I stayed there a long time, but I didn’t win anything.”

Granted, players come and go, but the situation at Arsenal was an unfortunate one. Wenger had to pay off the new stadium and as such he couldn’t afford to keep everyone.

But has the spurned returns of Fabregas and Song become a matter of Wenger having too much pride and wanting to stick it to the two midfielders?

No doubt Wenger would love to win without the two, just to show them they should have stayed, and while I admire that mindset, it may be a bit egotistical given what the two could have contributed to the squad.

What do you think? Are you on Wenger’s side in his dual rejection or should he have swallowed his pride and welcomed the two back?
