Arsene Wenger Changes Arsenal’s January Transfer Window Priorities

Earlier this month, Arsene Wenger relieved fans a bit when he finally admitted that Arsenal would indeed be signing a center-back as their number one priority this transfer window.

But now, Wenger has either changed his mind, or he’s playing with our heads again. He told the Guardian:

"There is a need there [to enter the market] but the right opportunity has to come up. To buy, simply to buy, is not what we want to do but if the right opportunity comes up, we will do it.If you look at the number of games some players played and the injuries we have with Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Mikel Arteta, we are a bit short at the moment in midfield."

While Arsenal have been linked to every midfielder in the known world, I’d be cautious about getting your hopes up. There won’t be a major signing at midfield. There will be no Isco or Shaqiri or someone similar.

All Wenger said is that his midfield is overworked, meaning he’ll be looking for a budget midfielder to take some of the workload a bit. Don’t be surprised to see another signing along the lines of Kim Kallstrom (but hopefully this time they’ll play).

And if we’re being honest, when you look at Arsenal’s midfield, there is no space for another premium talent when we’re healthy. If we do shovel out cash on a really good attacking midfielder, where does that leave our injured masses when they return to health? Arsenal’s midfield is stacked, it’s just a matter of getting them backed.

While big names are always fun to nab (Alexis!!), this is just a temporary problem and as such, needs only a temporary solution.
