Mario Suarez Reeks of a Typical Arsene Wenger Signing

The January transfer window is officially here, which means that all of the speculation and rumors will finally lead to something. Well, that’s not entirely true, because the rumors could very well lead to nothing and once February rolls around, we’ll still be following every single painful rumor.

But for the time being, Arsenal are linked  to another defensive midfielder (by multiple sources, including the Guardian): Mario Suarez of Atletico Madrid.

I actually completely buy this rumor, and here’s why:

  1. It’s so cheap. Suarez will fetch nowhere near double digits.
  2. He’s unsettled, and Arsene Wenger can “rescue” him.
  3. Hypothetically speaking, it’s a temporary solution to a temporary problem. Arsene Wenger completely believes in our current midfield set up, but we’re just out of bodies. Therefore if the objective is to get another body that’s just average (Flamini?) then we’ve most certainly found our man.
  4. Kim Kallstrom 2.0! Arsenal needed a defensive midfielder last January and Wenger’s answer was Kim Kallstrom, who tiptoed onto the pitch once or twice before returning home. A real solution hasn’t been had since. Remember those old cartoons where there’s a hole in the bottom of a ship and a piece of bubblegum is used to plug the hole? That’s what Suarez is. A piece of bubblegum that Wenger could use to try to convince us that he’s interested in stopping the sinking.
  5. It’s January, and therefore the transfer market is as illusive as ever, but only to Arsene Wenger. The right guy just doesn’t exist, clearly, and as such we’ll just have to keep dealing with average signings until Mr. Wenger finds Mr. Right (who will probably be a 15-year old French striker with a promising future)

I’m really sick of it at this point. If Morgan Schneiderlin and William Carvalho are truly available, we absolutely must have one. They are young, proven, and could benefit Arsenal immensely.

No more of this “oh where is Mr. Right?” Teams like Chelsea have found 30 Mr. Right’s since we even dared to find one (and his name isn’t Mesut Ozil…. at least not yet).

What do you think Gooners, is Suarez Mr. Right?
