Per Mertesacker
Now we’re getting into players who are less likely to leave, but who wouldn’t be all that surprising to see go. Per Mertesacker will likely stay at Arsenal, but the only thing that makes me second-guess that is Arsene Wenger’s dealing with the defense in the past.
Just this past summer, when Arsenal were already short of defenders, he sold Thomas Vermaelen, leaving Arsenal absolutely no cover beyond Calum Chambers.
Now that Gabriel Paulista is potentially usurping Mertesacker and given that we still have Calum Chambers and Mathieu Debuchy, would Wenger look at the German as overstock and sell him while he still has worth?
It’s not completely unreasonable. Mertesacker will turn 31 next season and his performance has been hit-and-miss this year. The Telegraph acknowledges that all things considered, his future is definitely in question at Arsenal.
