Unless you’ve been living under a rock at the bottom of a well in the middle of the forest just outside of nowhere, you’ve heard the rumors that Petr Cech is coming to Arsenal. Everyone and their sister seems to be of the opinion that Arsenal need a world-class keeper because the two they have just aren’t enough.

In case the logistics of the situation weren’t enough to disprove the rumor, Arsene Wenger has dismissed the rumor as well. When questioned on May 15th, Arsene Wenger said that “We have world-class goalkeepers, we have three,” (via ESPNFC). Three may be a bit of an overstatement, but we definitely have two, and the internal competition is enough to keep them both at the top of their game.

But just in case the logistics and the denial of the man who runs the club isn’t enough to disprove the rumor, let’s look at it from the point of view of what Arsenal traditionally do in the transfer market.

A lot of people have made the claim that beating Chelsea with Petr Cech would be salt in Jose Mourinho’s wound. Mourinho wants Petr Cech to move abroad, preferably to PSG, but everyone else, except anyone associated with Arsenal, have said that Petr Cech is requesting a move to Arsenal (via the Independent).

So back to the “salt in the wound” idea. It wouldn’t work like that. Consider the personalities of Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger. Acquiring Petr Cech would be taking Mourinho’s sloppy seconds and I don’t think that kind of thing is going to appeal to Arsene Wenger given his overly-expressed opinion of the Portuguese Manager.

Not only that, but when is the last time Arsenal acquired a key player from a rival? You could make the case that Danny Welbeck was one such scenario, but that was the first in years. Petr Cech hasn’t made a comment other than calling it speculation.

The pundits will continue to ‘know’ what’s best for Arsenal and they’ll continue to read into whatever comments are said and twist them to their liking. But when you break the Petr Cech rumors down to the bare bones, all you need to know is that this potential move has absolutely nothing ‘Arsenal’ about it. David Ospina is one of the saviors of Arsenal’s season and Wojciech Szczesny is as motivated as ever to reclaim his spot. That kind of competition should be excitement enough within our goalkeeping ranks. No Petr Cechs need apply.
