I find this rumor the most compelling of them all because it makes sense on so many levels. With FC Schalke on the decline, Howedes made the statement that “a move abroad at a certain time would be work an experience. England would be my goal,” (via the Metro).

That statement makes it pretty obvious that he’s inviting offers. Who better than Arsenal? With a heavy German contingent, particularly Per Mertesacker, it would be easy to have a few words in the ear of Howedes to swing him our way.

Not only that, but Howedes’ versatility makes him a dream come true for Arsene Wenger. Much like Calum Chambers, who can line up at right back or center back, Howedes can do left back or center back. The left back spot at Arsenal is still a toss up between Gibbs and Monreal but Howedes would find very little resistance marching in and making it his.

Gabriel was brought on to cover at center but that still leaves Arsenal with an aging Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny, Gabriel and Calum Chambers as the only center back options. Howedes would be excellent for depth and he can even be groomed into Per Mertesacker’s replacement. He’s not quite as tall as his countryman but 6’2″ is plenty of height for a center back.

As far as price, Transfermarkt has him listed at around 15-20 million pounds, a price that Arsenal could surely afford to pay for the services he provides.
