4. William Carvalho

Sticking with the Portuguese trend, let’s move to Sporting CP, where William Carvalho resides. Carvalho was all but set to make the move to Arsenal last summer before we found out that his price tag was just several thousand pounds too high. Sporting believed he was worth far more than Arsenal was willing to pay. Supposedly Arsenal still submitted an offer around 20-25 million, but it was deemed too little.

Fast forward to this summer and kick in a little sense on the part of Sporting and they’ve decided that the offer made by Arsenal was actually enough after all. The problem is that we already filled the hole that Carvalho would have hypothetically filled. And we filled it for free with the best defensive midfielder in the league – Francis Coquelin.

It’s still a fairly established fact that Arsenal need more holding midfield help. Of course, if Arsene Wenger wouldn’t sign a holding midfielder before Coquelin, it begs to be questioned why he would now, but maybe he will.

Carvalho is not the answer, however. At 23 years of age, he still shows tremendous inconsistency, and that’s in the Portuguese league. He would be another project for Arsene Wenger, but why take on a 23-year old project when we have a bonafide 23-year old stud already raking in the middle of the field. Not to mention the fact that he has much younger projects waiting in the academy.

Not to mention this ‘project’ from Portugal would cost 25 million pounds. It isn’t worth it.
