Edin Dzeko

One of the latest arrivals to apply to the ‘striker wanted’ sign hanging from the front window at the Emirates is Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko. The Manchester Evening News has reported the interest, with Arsenal still in the market for some major signings this transfer window.

It seems as though Arsenal often become like a rescue shelter for players wanting away from unpleasant conditions at their current squad. Dzeko falls into that category, as serving as Sergio Aguero’s manservant probably is not what he expected when he enlisted for the Blues.

However, the problem I have with Edin Dzeko is the same problem I had with Jackson Martinez and the same reason why Arsene Wenger will not waste money on him. At 29 years of age and almost solely an aerial threat, Dzeko is currently a lesser striker than Olivier Giroud. Not only that, but he plays a very similar type of game. So why would Wenger drop the 15-20 million that he is reportedly worth?

Joao Moutinho

Moutinho is a special talent given his skill set and versatility, yet I find myself tossing him in the ‘why bother’ bin as well. At 28 years of age, Moutinho is a high work-rate midfielder that can play anywhere in front of the defensive line, however he prefers the attacking half.

On the surface, it seems like a decent fit. He can spot Coquelin a break or two, albeit his defense, while admirable, is nothing to write home about, and he can also rotate around a bit through the congestion of Arsenal’s forward midfielders.

Then you run across the 15-18 million pound asking price and you scratch your head and pass. No depth signing is worth that much.

Jese Rodriguez

The Metro opines that Arsenal are after the wrong Real Madrid striker, and when you consider the logic they employ, it seems hard to argue. Rodriguez is a 22 year old striker with fantastic shot and pass accuracy and he looks to be the next something special.

Stuck behind Ronaldo and Arsenal’s target Karim Benzema, Rodriguez could feasibly move in when they are old and grey, but that may well take another six to seven years. Chances are he will not be keen on waiting that long.

Arsenal are known for giving young players opportunities and he would find no shortage of opportunities. The thing is that Arsenal do not need another young, promising striker, they have several. They need someone who is proven.

Mathieu Flamini

The Mirror indicates that Galatasaray are keen to keep piling up Arsenal rejects, as they seek to reunite Podolski and Mathieu Flamini within their ranks.

Flamini plays the anchor role that Francis Coquelin has monopolized and figures to be out of the equation with Arsenal’s growing credibility.

This move is supposed to free up room so Arsenal can finally get that true-blooded defensive midfielder that they need to reinforce Coquelin.
