Monreal took the starting left back job from Kieran Gibbs due to Gibbs’ inconsistency but after a pretty stellar start to his tenure, Monreal fell into inconsistency too. There is still a chance that Arsenal sell Monreal and/or buy a left back such as Faouzi Ghoulam, so that would obviously make it even more of a down year at Arsenal.

The biggest problem with Monreal is his lack of upside. He is 29 years old and at the highest level he can be. There is no more we can get out of Nacho Monreal. That is a shame because as it stands, he isn’t exactly rocking the left back world.

Arsenal is a team that is starting to grow in strength at every position, but left back remains the same. I am still holding out hope for a Ghoulam arrival, but even if not, Gibbs will find this year a bit easier to maintain his grasp on the starting spot.
