Selling Olivier Giroud Would Defeat the Purpose of Arsenal Buying Karim Benzema
By Josh Sippie
The biggest news of the Arsenal summer has to be the latest Instagram post by top Gunner target Karim Benzema. In case you missed it, here it is:
For a little background on the image, Karim Benzema had been in China playing in a preseason tournament for Real Madrid. After not featuring thus far into the tournament, Benzema is clearly photographed here on what looks to be a private jet with the phrase “lets leave the past behind us” as the caption.
The amount of questions that are raised from this are numerous. It looks like Karim Benzema could be headed to Arsenal. Along with that news, a healthy amount of rumors started popping up that Olivier Giroud could be sold to make way for his countryman Karim Benzema.
Arsenal are not going to sell Olivier Giroud. That would defeat the whole purpose. What Arsene Wenger and Arsenal want is a striker who can bring the best out of Giroud and provide depth for the team. The only striker that is a foolproof solution to this equation is Karim Benzema.

Not only did Olivier Giroud just lock in his future at Arsenal until 2018, but he has even welcomed the arrival of another striker (as reported by the Telegraph), saying that it would make the team better. The two have an established rapport together from playing on the French National team. Giroud has spoken about his partnership with Benzema before:
“Why not play as a pair? In tactical terms, we could be put together if we have to go and get a result. It’s good to have forwards who complete each other and are complementary in their qualities. The competition for places has always been healthy,” he said via ESPNFC.
This type of partnership can be replicated at Arsenal. With just Giroud and Walcott as viable striker options, Benzema would provide an excellent trio that would leave no room for questioning Arsenal’s striker credibility.
Olivier Giroud has been so good for Arsenal. As I have mentioned before, his goal clip puts him on pace to be a potential Arsenal legend, yet he continues to get no prolonged respect. For so long he has been called a lamp post at Arsenal. He has been deemed a one-trick pony, but that has never been the case for Olivier Giroud. His style of hold-up play and his ability to link up the attack going forward is incredibly underrated.
It is also very similar to what Karim Benzema can do, however Benzema is not the aerial threat that Giroud is.
In short, the two would be the perfect striker pair, with Theo Walcott as an added option. It does not make sense to ship off Olivier Giroud when this rumored new striker is going to enhance his play so much. Plus, Giroud is one of Arsene Wenger’s proudest signings.

At a cost of just 9.6 million pounds, he was a bargain buy who continues to get better. Each year, his goal-per-90 clip has improved. This past year his goals per 90 got as high as .96 before settling in the .50-.60 range. That is a very successful striker. He has expressed how much he wants to see Arsenal succeed and despite all the experts out there saying that Arsenal need more than Giroud, he continues to deliver.
Sure, Olivier Giroud goes cold from time to time and has bouts of inconsistency, that is what Karim Benzema is for.
It would be foolish for Arsenal to sell Olivier Giroud, but it does not seem like something that is likely to happen. However, the arrival of Karim Benzema appears to be a different story.
