Nemanja Matic vs Francis Coquelin
Two of the best defensive midfielders in the world. Francis Coquelin burst onto the scene last year from absolute obscurity at Charlton Athletic. He emerged as an intercepting, tackling machine. Quickly overcoming his yellow card collecting, Coquelin displayed that he was going to be a mainstay in this Arsenal squad.

Last year, he averaged just under four interceptions a game and 3.2 tackles a game as well. While Coquelin’s passing and offense is yet to develop, it does not have too. His defense is all the team needs from him and he will continue to deliver.
Nemanja Matic previously held the honor of being the best defensive midfielder in the Premier League, but depending on who you ask, Coquelin took that from him. Matic averages about half a tackle more per game but significantly interceptions. His offense is better as well, as he did notch a goal and a few assists.
Verdict: Coquelin is ruthless. His timing is spot on and he fears no one. For that reason, Coquelin tops Matic. For what it’s worth, it was only by a thread.
