Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain the Poster Child of “New Era” of Selfies and Success at Arsenal
By Josh Sippie
I do not like selfies. Particularly selfie sticks. How conceited do you have to be to snap photos of yourself? However, being absolutely engrossed in everything Arsenal, the selfie culture that surrounds the Gunners is perfectly alright with me. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is the new crowned prince of selfies in the Premier League and he has taken to their defense in the wake of Roy Keane’s bizarre criticism.

“But they also have one or two players who are more interested in selfies and six-packs, guys who are trying to get their pictures taken every day of the week,” Keane said via the Independent.
Interestingly, if you asked me to pinpoint the “one or two” Arsenal players who selfie the most, Alexis and Mesut Ozil come to mind. If Keane is saying that Ozil and Alexis are more interested in selfies than winning, then he hasn’t a solitary clue about what is going on in North London.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, being in the midst of the selfie era of this fine world, has been one of the main guys that brought this culture to Arsenal. He and Santi Cazorla are often responsible for finding random cameras laying around on the pitch and snapping a few photos of themselves after a well-fought win.
“It’s a new era, isn’t it? Some people do it, some don’t. We’re serious about winning trophies. Personally, and I can speak for the rest of the squad, we’ve been serious every single year I’ve been at the club about winning trophies,” the Ox said via the Guardian. The confusion in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s statements regarding Keane’s criticism is palpable.
How is taking selfies any different than running around and celebrating in other ways? If nothing else, snapping a few photos of you and your team mates celebrating gives the fans some first-hand pictures of what it was like to be on the pitch with their favorite players, celebrating the win.
This “selfie era” at Arsenal is coming hand-in-hand with a new wave of success that looks ready to hit the club. It is also hand-in-hand with the coming of age for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. As such, the Ox finds himself as the poster child of a new era of success and selfies at Arsenal, where he looks to be for the forseeable future.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened up the season in the best way he possibly could – with a goal against Chelsea to send Arsenal home happy and a few token selfies with his new, intriguing hair cut, the likes of which Roy Keane must lose sleep over. The Ox is a special talent and even amidst the new Arsenal arrivals, from Ozil to Alexis to Petr Cech, the Ox has proven that Arsene Wenger’s astuteness in purchasing young talents is still what fuels this team.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was purchased when he was 16 years old from Southampton and he is quickly blossoming into one of the best young players in the game. He is going to make a long-term impact on this fine sport, and what better way to document it then with a few photographs?
Even someone as violently opposed to selfies as me can understand how the team selfies make sense. As far as the six pack comment, aren’t six packs a result of hard work and fitness? Alexis Sanchez did of course point out that he wants to look handsome when he scores goals, which surely gives Roy Keane a significant amount of indigestion.
The point is that as long as the team is successful, who cares how they celebrate it?
Anyway, this is an exciting time for Arsenal and for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and we have an entire season of success and selfies to look forward to.
