Arsenal Need to Call off Pursuit of Borussia Dortmund’s Aubameyang, Reus

Arsenal are perpetually headhunting at least three Borussia Dortmund products. Over the past year, they have been linked to Mats Hummels, Marco Reus, Kevin Grosskreutz, Nevan Subotic, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Ilkay Gundogan and more.

Last year, as Dortmund floundered about at the bottom of the Bundesliga table, it made sense because the team was struggling and Jurgen Klopp was on his way out. That is cause for a fire sale.

However, Dortmund came out this Bundesliga season with an absolute bang. They beat up third place and Champion’s League side Borussia Monchengladbach by a score of 4-0, placing them second in the table behind their favorite rival Bayern Munich, who won 5-0.

Two of the primary contributors to that win were the high-flying striker Aubameyang and the ever versatile and talented Marco Reus, both of whom contributed a goal and an assist in the match.

Aubameyang is the one with the strongest link, as it is indicated by the Telegraph that he is Arsenal’s solution should Karim Benzema not work out, but it is not that easy.

Dortmund players are much like Arsenal’s, they have a strong sense of loyalty (current Arsenal, not Nasri’s Arsenal). If they can, they will stay with their team through the good and the bad. Last season was most definitely a bad time for Dortmund but that did not push away too many of their star players, most of whom inked new contracts instead of seeking their fortunes elsewhere.

It is hard to pry players away from that kind of environment, when all of their team mates are committing their future to the club. It is even harder to do it when that club is successful. Dortmund may have started out awfully last season but they turned on the jets and clawed their way back up to seventh in the league table – no easy feat.

This season, they burst out of the gates and reminded the world that this is Borussia Dortmund and they do not settle for seventh place. What is amazing is that this just about the same Dortmund, with very few summer signings being made.

Whether or not Arsene Wenger was ever really in heavy pursuit of Reus, Aubameyang or the handful of other links is still up for question but whatever pursuit he did have going, he needs to call off. No BvB faithful are going to jump ship now, and rightfully so.

That being said, if one pursuit has to still be engaged, it should be for Ilkay Gundogan, who’s services would imbue the Arsenal midfield with some added depth in the holding portion of the midfield. There is no doubt that Reus or Aubameyang would benefit the Arsenal attack but given our vast array of attacking options, I cannot see Wenger putting together a serious, hard-fought effort to nab one when neither parties are too inclined to see a move pushed through.
