Danny Welbeck will feel Brunt of Arsenal’s Transfer Stress
By Josh Sippie
In case you have not heard, Arsene Wenger did not spend a dime for Arsenal on transfer deadline day. The club was left in its current status until the winter transfer window opens up. That leaves the spearhead of the attack in the ever-capable hands of Olivier Giroud. He does after all, have a proven pedigree for scoring goals. No matter the discredit that is heaped on Giroud, nothing can hide how bonafide a goal-scorer he is.

However, even Arsene Wenger noticed that his dear Frenchman could not do it alone. Last summer, Wenger waited until the last minute but he did bring in another striker for reinforcement. That striker was Danny Welbeck. For the most part, Welbeck did not live up to expectations, as goals continued to elude him at Arsenal as they had at Manchester United. He did contribute in other ways, though.
That being said, when it came to scoring goals, it was down to Olivier Giroud or Alexis Sanchez.
This transfer window, many thought Arsene Wenger was going to bring in more striker coverage for Arsenal. Perhaps he would even bring in a world-class striker to take over for Giroud. Neither came to fruition. Arsenal still have the same striker crop they did at this point last year.
That is not necessarily a problem, as Arsenal rode this striker crop to one of their best and most promising seasons in recent memory. However, the problem is that we yet again find ourselves with Danny Welbeck as the most viable striker option behind Olivier Giroud. Especially now with Theo Walcott faltering.
Arsene Wenger clearly has immense faith in Danny Welbeck to deliver a final result. Welbeck has acknowledged this faith before and vowed to repay it. Perhaps that IOU from Welbeck was enough to stave off any potential effort to sign someone like Charlie Austin or Alexandre Pato. Either way, Danny Welbeck now knows that Wenger has faith in him to become a striker, not just a quality team player. That brings pressure.

Danny Welbeck has been hurt since the end of last season. He missed out on Arsenal’s superb preseason and will yet again be joining the team without having had the privilege of a full preseason. Seeing as how the team is already not clicking, that means another potential non-clicker will be joining the midst. Have I mentioned the pressure?
No one will deny that Danny Welbeck is a phenomenal athlete. The guy oozes athleticism and he does everything well – except score goals. Funny thing is that as a striker, you need to score goals. The pressure is going to be squarely placed on Welbeck’s shoulders to be a viable striker behind Giroud. He will be featuring in the League Cup, the FA Cup and even the Champion’s League.
Lets hope that Wenger’s faith is not misplaced.
