An official statement from the club indicates that Jack Wilshere is going to require surgery on his hairline fracture. This means that the young midfielder, who was supposed to be due back any day, will now be out an extra three months.

The news really is rather tragic. However at the same time, Arsenal supporters should be used to it by now. Jack Wilshere has gone from the future of the club to a bonus when he is healthy. The problem is that bonus comes far less often than we would like.

As BBC Sport points out, Jack Wilshere has been an injury factory since 2011 when he sustained a stress fracture. Nothing has ever worked out since. Whether he never fully recovered or he just has incredibly bad luck, Arsenal’s prodigal son may be headed down the same road as Abou Diaby, the ‘what if?’ road.

What makes it worse is that Jack Wilshere has returned from each sequential injury looking more promising than ever. He began the 2014/15 campaign looking on point, as he was the key man in a crucial Manchester City clash. However, After a spirited Marouane Fellaini headbutt, Wilshere went down for the bulk of the season yet again. He returned at the tail end.

Upon his return, Wilshere looked as good as he ever had yet again. Against West Brom he scored an absolute scorcher and gave all Arsenal supporters a vision of what life would be like if only he could remain healthy. He went into the summer in brilliant form, scoring twice for the English National team against Slovenia.

A good preseason was crushed by the news that Jack Wilshere had sustained a hairline fracture in training and would be out for some time. It did not seem too terrible at the time. He was even ahead of schedule before this setback proved that his leg was not healing properly.

As such, the surgery Wilshere will undergo will see a metal plate put in his leg. The three month recovery period puts his return at the New Year. All we can do is hope that the metal plate strengthens the weakest part of Wilshere’s body, his legs. Maybe this is what he should have done all along.

There is no mistaking the talent that Jack Wilshere has. When both Arsenal and the English National team look to build their future around one guy, that guy is a special talent. Wilshere signed on with the club when he was just 9 years old and from that moment, Arsenal was in his blood. He has always fought tooth and nail for the club. When healthy, his presence and passion is infectious.

Even with the frequency of these injuries, it is still so disheartening when they occur. So much hope was placed on this year for Jack to finally overcome his injury problems. He is just 23 though. There is always time to turn it around. However, given that he is only set to resume training in January, and that is if everything goes accordingly, this may be yet another year lost. Even Arsene Wenger pointed out that the only thing Jack Wilshere needs at this point is 1-2 healthy years strung together. Time to reset and try again.

We wish Jack Wilshere a speedy recovery and look forward to his return.
