Thomas Muller has spoken out about the temptations of going to the Premier League. The German striker has admitted that the wages of England are incredibly tempting and that he strongly considered a move to England’s top tier. Despite him acknowledging that a lot of German clubs are upset with how much English clubs spend, Muller defendeded this practice. He said that it is good for football if the wages start going the way of the Premier League.

Thomas Muller was the target of Manchester United interest. Needless to say, United were willing to shell out a pretty penny to secure Muller’s signature, but no such deal happened. A large part of that comes down to Thomas Muller being the go-to front man on one of the most powerful teams in the world of football. Bayern Munich are always favorites to win any competition they are involved in.

Bayern Munich boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has admitted that it is only going to get tougher with how rich the Premier League is getting. Holding on to stars is not going to be as easy as promising current and future glory. Thomas Muller piled onto this fact by pointing out that playing football is still a job. They still have to live on it and if higher wages can be found elsewhere, it is always going to be tempting.

While it was Manchester United that was pitching offers to Bayern Munich, it is Arsenal that find themselves with a premium opportunity to tempt the German superstar. They will be playing against Munich in a most undesirable situation. They need points. But With Bayern Munich always figuring to be a heavy-hitter, Arsenal face an improbable run to move on. And if they were to pull that off, people would be impressed. Perhaps one of those ‘people’ would be Thomas Muller.

I’ll admit it, this is a major long shot to think about. But Thomas Muller is the first superstar striker in some time to admit that the Premier League is appealing. But that was just for the wages. There is more to soccer than wages. If Arsenal can prove that they can hang with the big dogs in Europe – tall order, I know – then maybe, just maybe, Thomas Muller will see Arsenal as a viable option.

Money and trophies, those are the two biggest factors of appeal for players on the move. If Arsenal can put themselves in position to pull in major silverware, which they have done a swell job of locally, they can knock out one factor of that appeal. But European relevance is a major sub-factor as well. And Arsenal historically struggle in European competitions.

However, Arsenal is currently in the midst of a huge wave of momentum. If they can take three points from Bayern Munich, even at home, and get back into the running in the Champion’s League, it would be massive. To move on from the group stage would almost feel like a trophy in and of itself (don’t worry, I know it isn’t).

From there, Arsenal have the financial power. I know we, at times, doubt if Arsene Wenger will use it, but Arsenal have the financial power to sign just about anyone. That includes Thomas Muller. Hopefully Wenger heard Muller’s statements, because if that is not a door even slightly cracking open, I don’t know what is.
