If you take a game at the value of its scoreline, then Arsenal stomped Swansea City. But in all reality, they fought tooth and nail for that first goal and then opened it up via the counterattack from there.
The first half was all Swansea City. Attack after attack by the home side left he Arsenal defense looking rather uncomfortable. Bafetimbi Gomis had one instance in particular where he got in behind the defense and had a one on one attempt with Petr Cech. But as he will often do, the Czech stopper came out on top. Maybe it was just a bit lucky.
Swansea had a plethora of chances pass them by in the first half and Arsenal had to be happy to hit the locker rooms at half with no goals scored.
The second half was a different story. Arsenal came out guns blazing and began to reassert the dominance that we have seen throughout the past month (Sheffield Wednesday excluded). However, Swansea continued to match Arsenal blow for blow.
Finally, the ice breaker came on a corner kick that found the ever-lurking forehead of Olivier Giroud. Take a gander:
Whether it was a routine that was planned or not, Giroud came out looking the tactician that found the space that got the goal. That would be all Arsenal needed but it would not be all they got.
The Gunners resumed counter attacking duties with Swansea still looking pretty coherent going forward. Unfortunately, the Arsenal defense had fixed itself up and the team was back on the front foot.
Which lead to the next goal, this time from the foot of Laurent Koscielny, his second goal in a week. The French defender masterfully and completely legally boxed out Swansea keeper Lukasz Fabianski to turn in the second goal of the match. Watch:
Liberty Stadium was up in arms, but referee Kevin Friend saw nothing wrong with Koscielny boxing out his former team mate and sticking it into the net.
With the game decided, Arsenal were able to sit back even more and invite pressure from the Swans, whose desperation was increasing. As is usually the case, that desperation turned into exposure at the back. Arsenal were able to capitalize from their man of the match, Joel Campbell, who notched his first goal in the EPL in his first EPL start. This is how it played out:
Campbell’s composure on the ball really deserves major credit as he did not rush the shot, he did not sky it, he simply gathered it and placed it like he had been doing it for years.
Next up is Bayern Munich. I don’t think I am the only one excited to see Joel Campbell’s encore performance.
