Arsene Wenger Playing Peacemaker In Jose Mourinho Saga

You will not find two ‘in-charge’ men more likely to throw down the fisticuffs (again) and duke it out. But Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho have that history and it has reached a boiling point at times. Few will ever forget that time that Arsene Wenger completely lost his cool and shoved Jose Mourinho. Twice. It was a glorious moment, but at the same time, we hate to see Jose Mourinho getting under Le Prof’s skin.

And yet, throughout all of it, it is Arsene Wenger who is coming out on top and he is determined to stay there. Throughout the season, Mourinho has been making numerous references to Arsene Wenger. It’s as if the special one goes to bed at night and counts Wengers rather than sheep. That was a poor joke, but you get the gist.

The point is that all this time it has been Mourinho who has been completely obsessed with his French counterpart. It has been Mourinho that has been so deadset on taking town Wenger and belittling him that now that the tables have turned and Mourinho is on the back foot, he is looking rather foolish.

In complaining to the referees, Mourinho referenced Wenger, yet again proving that this obsession is past the point of being unhealthy. He has always made it quite clear that there are few things in the world that will come between him and trying to lift himself over Wenger.

It is rather pathetic, actually.

What makes it even better is Arsene Wenger’s response to Chelsea’s complete derailing. Wenger was handed a golden opportunity to rub Mourinho’s nose in the dirt when the press asked him what he thought about Chelsea’s season and the potential firing of Jose Mourinho. Wenger’s response:

“I don’t talk about that too much. We must focus on our own game and try to keep a good balance. We need to keep our calmness, humility and our hunger and confidence” (via Fox Sports).

There is a nasty little maniacal part of me that wants to believe that Wenger said this just to make it even worse for Mourinho. To make the Portuguese think that he is now too insignificant for Le Prof’s consideration. But that is not Arsene Wenger. Arsene Wenger really does not care enough to comment. On this side of the squabble, there are more important things.

Arsene Wenger took the high road. Whether that will ever bridge the gap between him and Jose Mourinho is doubtful, but maybe it can turn into a rivalry like that of Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson. But probably not. Mourinho does not seem like the amiable nemesis kind of guy.
