Arsenal had plenty of weapons in their… arsenal… going into the match up against Bayern Munich but after some rather conspicuous refereeing to disallow Mesut Ozil’s goal, Arsenal found life rather difficult. Just because we can, let’s walk you through the match, step by step as it happened. All videos of goals can be seen after the point-by-point summary of proceedings.

  • 10 – Thiago sends a ball in for Robert Lewandowski, who snuck in behind Gabriel Paulista, to head in. GOAL 1-0 Bayern.
  • 12 – Arsenal seem to have equalized from a ball off of Mesut Ozil’s torso. The score even leveled 1-1 but the referee gives in to Bayern Munich’s complaints and rules a belated hand ball, sending the score back down to 1-0. Mesut Ozil got a yellow card in the process. As if disallowing the goal wasn’t enough.

  • 67 – Benatia comes on for Boateng. I think Pep Guardiola is putting on a kit too, he feels sprightly.

  • 89 – Bayern Munich decided that they were not done, as Thomas Muller added another, just in case that three-goals-in-one-minute-comeback was in the cards. GOAL 5-1.

Let’s take a look at each, agonizing goal, starting with the first.

Lewandowski originally appeared offside, but given the lack of pressure put on Thiago and Gabriel losing track of the Pole, it was just the easiest goal that will be scored on Arsenal all year.

The second goal was scored by Arsenal and pulled the game to level pegging. Mesut Ozil through his torso at a cross from Nacho Monreal. Here it is:

Oh wait. It was disallowed, rather late I may add. And a yellow card. What a change in momentum.

The second goal from Bayern Munich was rather lucky. Have a look:

As you can see, Petr Cech had the shot covered, but a little nick off of Mertesacker’s knee saw the goal into the back of the net for a dagger to the heart. The third goal was as impressive as they come, although it could not have been achieved without some lackluster defending in the Arsenal midfield, which is usually so sturdy. No one closes down David Alaba and this happened:

Can’t even really be mad about that one. It was a tremendous effort. Nothing Petr Cech could do about any of those goals. The bleeding would continue in the second half when Arjen Robben came on and delivered within one minute of his introduction. Here, watch some more footage of Arsenal’s defense not doing its job.

Nothing is good about any of this.

Olivier Giroud, however, had been good throughout the match and he was rewarded with a beautifully taken goal. Have a smile, Gooners:

Call it a consolation prize.

Tying the ribbon on that consolation prize was Thomas Muller, but out of spite, we are not going to post that goal here.

Overall, the match was hurtful. Bayern literally wanted to rub Arsenal in the dirt and with a team as battered and tired as Arsenal, they found that task rather easy.

Giroud was a sole bright spot on the match, but at least the big Frenchman has continued his fine run of form despite Arsenal having the life sucked out of them in Germany.
