Arsenal can still qualify for the next stage of the Champions League. It will actually not be that strange of a situation. All they have to do is win out and hope that Bayern Munich beats Olympiakos.

Again, not that bizarre. But the big question that suddenly sprung up out of this situation is whether or not Bayern would put the peddle to the metal to beat Olympiakos. After all, if a draw would qualify Bayern Munich as the tops in the group, why would they overexert themselves for another win? Quite simple – For Arsenal’s sake.

“Arsenal fans need to be calm. The players are going to go and try to win against Olympiakos,” the Bayern manager said via SkySports.

This is great news, supposedly. At least we know that Bayern have the power to determine Arsenal’s fate. But Is that really that reassuring? The players will try to win but who’s saying that the players that Guardiola sends out will be enough to cope with a very inspired Olympiakos?

Not only that, but the words feel kind of demeaning. Arsenal is a proud team with a proud history and reminding us that we are not in control of our own fate burns worse than a 5-1 loss.

Of course, there is no one to blame but ourselves, but that does not change much. The question did leave Pep Guardiola little wiggle room. He answered the question in the most adequate way possible. The fact that what he said came out as a tad arrogant and demeaning is no fault of his. It just rubs salt in the wound that is Arsenal’s situation.

Wenger may be wanting to forget the Bayern Munich affair, but hopefully he will remember what it’s like to have to rely on other teams to bail him out. Maybe next time we will be better prepared. Then again, when has Arsene Wenger ever over-prepared?
