Arsenal vs Tottenham: A History Between The Clubs
By Nasra Osman
The North London Derby is upon us yet again, with Arsenal and Tottenham squaring off on Sunday in the first installment of the season. The history between the two clubs dates back to the first meeting between the two clubs in a friendly in 1887. We will not discuss who won the match.

The rivalry got underway in 1913 when Arsenal made the infamous trek from their home in Plumstead to Highbury, just four short miles from White Hart Lane. This little move put Arsenal and Tottenham as each other’s nearest opponent geographically and a rivalry was unavoidable.
Since that time, each successive match has increased the distaste between the two, at least between the fan bases. Very rarely will a player make the jump between clubs, but there have been two rather infamous moves. The first was seeing Sol Campbell move to Arsenal on a free in 2001. Naturally, the implications there are rather huge given the fact that Campbell went on to be a key member of the Invincible season.
The second was seeing Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor make the move, but even his move was not a straight shot. The Togolese striker first took his talents to Manchester City, setting the tone for the mass that would follow shortly after. It was after his stay with the Citizens that he moved onto Tottenham. Needless to say, every time he has the misfortune of playing at the Emirates, one can barely hear his name amidst the flood of boos.

Since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, Arsenal have been relatively dominant. They have won 18 matches out of 44 played, all while only losing 8 games during that span. It also begs to be mentioned that since Arsene Wenger has taken over Arsenal, the Spurs have never finished above their North London neighbors. How’s that for efficiency?
However, the most recent results between the North London rivals has not been too kind to Arsenal. Tottenham won their home game 2-1 last season, while the match at the Emirates ended in a lacklustre 1-1 draw. Nonetheless, Arsenal did claim a 2-1 victory over Spurs in the third round of the League Cup back in September.
Both clubs come into the match riding a fierce wave of momentum. Combining that with the history between the clubs guarantees an enthralling match-up. And yet, once the whistle is blown on Sunday, history, ancient and recent, will mean nothing, and both clubs will be looking to do one over on their fiercest rival.
