Former France international legend and Arsenal Invincible, Patrick Vieira has been appointed as the new head coach of MLS expansion team New York City F.C., after the sacking of Jason Kreis. Vieira has inked a three year deal with NYC.

In the team’s first year of operation they brought together a relatively mismatched team for their inaugural season. Composed of several MLS castaways as well as bonafide legends like Spanish great David Villa, English and Chelsea star Frank Lampard and iconic Italian maestro Andreas Pirlo, NYCFC had a mixed bag of success and disappointment.

Although they were unable to qualify for the MLS playoffs, most fans felt as though the first season in the Bronx was a success. A huge fan base formed around the new team which played its games in Yankee Stadium. Former head coach Jason Kreis enjoyed a great deal of success winning the MLS Cup with Real Salt Lake in 2009.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

However after failing to reach the playoffs in a weakened Eastern Division, Sheik Mansour, founder of City Football Group and owner of Manchester City, decided it was time to go in a new direction. Although many would probably feel this is a bit unfair given the fact that Kreis only received the services of Pirlo and Lampard more than halfway through the season.

This is Vieira’s first professional coaching job and he most recently worked with the Manchester City U-21 team. He has also been linked to a return to Arsenal.

During his time with Arsenal, Vieira was known as a hugely positive personality in the dressing room and on the pitch. He was an emphatic leader. He will no doubt add some energy into the NYCFC organization. Vieira will likely remain within the City Football Group’s coaching tree but it is worth noting that one of Arsenal’s all time greats is moving up in the world of coaching.
