8. Ian Wright

A true hero of Arsenal football club, Ian Wright, like Ted Drake from the legendary ’30s side, was in the side for one aim, to score goals. And like Drake, Ian Wright was a true poacher, a natural finisher, and a wonderful Arsenal player. His energetic performances generated huge support from sets of supporters, and he quickly became a legend of the ’90s side.

His pace was a thorn in the side of many a defender. He was a nuisance to defend against, a threat at any time in the game and a terrific goalscorer. Wright ended his career as the record goal scorer with 185 goals throughout his seven years with the Gunners. Wright is the true underdog story. Not picked up until he was nearly 22 by Crystal Palace, Wright was an instant success scoring goals wherever he’s played.

He is, however, best known for his goal scoring outings at Highbury. His goals fired Arsenal to a cup double and a league and cup double winning season, as well as a European Cup Winner’s Cup in 1994. His goal scoring rate was exceptional. He was the top scorer for Arsenal in six straight seasons throughout the ’90s. A true goalscorer, and a true Arsenal legend, Ian Wright was not most technically gifted player, but his pace, his composure, his finishing and most importantly his goals make him one of the most loved Arsenal players.
