5 Reasons Arsenal Should Give Mathieu Flamini New Contract
By Josh Sippie
4. Flamini is already with the team
Is this really a reason? Yes. Absolutely. With Arsenal, you appreciate what you have because you never know what happens when what you have leaves. I remember Arsenal’s defense when Thomas Vermaelen left. Wenger also loaned out Carl Jenkinson and suddenly, Arsenal had four defenders for the foreseeable future. That is not a situation that a title-contending team can be in.
Yet with Arsene Wenger, we have to expect that no one will be signed. Especially when it comes to defensive midfield. Arsenal has been understaffed there for a decade. Any player we have there is a valuable commodity. And as I covered on the last slide, Flamini has not been bad.
January is coming up. There are a ton of defensive midfield names that Arsenal is tied to, but again, there is a very distinct chance that Arsenal do not make a big signing. There is a somewhat smaller, yet still big chance that we don’t get another in the summer as well. Coquelin cannot do this job alone and if Flamini can cover as well as he has been doing, why not let him keep doing it?
Next up, a bit more about Flamini’s role at the club.
