3. Sol Campbell

The cool thing about free things is that if they don’t work out, you did not lost anything. Well, Sol Campbell was free and he did work out. The hulking Englishman had said that he would never play for Arsenal but after being assured of protection from David Dein, Campbell made the free switch, opting out of being Tottenham’s highest paid player ever and opting into Champions League football. And so much more.

Campbell was crucial to Arsenal’s Invincible season. He held down the defense for 49 appearances across the season and was the same invincible force that Wenger had so coveted when playing against him.

Campbell would become an Arsenal great in no time. Despite leaving for Portsmouth after five years with the Gunners, he still holds a special place in North London. On the red side.
