Arsenal’s 10 Best Signings Ever Under Arsene Wenger
By Josh Sippie
9. Robert Pires
It takes a lot to stand out and make a name for yourself when playing next to Thierry Henry, but that is exactly what Robert Pires did. The French winger would score 84 total goals for Arsenal in his six years of play. Much of that time was spent with fluctuating results, as Pires often had trouble maintaining his form.
And yet Pires was one of the most crucial pieces to Arsenal’s Invincible campaign. He was just another addition made in 2000 that really solidified Arsenal’s push to dominance.
Pires was not done after the Invincible season, however. He would score the third most goals in the Premier league in the 2004/5 season with 14, naturally behind Thierry Henry in first place.
Robert Pires’ departure was a heartbreaking one, as it appeared that Arsene Wenger had really dropped the ball. Pires wanted a new contract to stay with the club, but Wenger refused to offer him anything more than a 12-month deal.
Pires was voted by Arsenal fans as the sixth greatest player in the club’s history.
Moving on to number eight we will have to put our sour feelings behind us.
