Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Transfer To Arsenal Becoming Oddly LIkely
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal is never likely to make a big money signing, yet the more they are written off, the more they appear. Could Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang be different?
When it comes to big money signings at Arsenal, there have been about two in the past decade. Naturally, those two came in the past three years. But now that Arsenal is in a new financial situation and fully out of that nasty Emirates debt, they have the money to make big, immediate impact signings.

That still does not make them likely, however. Spending big money for the sake of spending is not the Arsenal way. They always seem to make more with less.
For that reason, the likelihood of someone like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang coming to Arsenal is always going to seem like a pipe dream. £42 million for a luxury signing at a position where Arsene Wenger has duly stocked up at sounds as likely as Wenger laying out the blueprints for a new stadium. Maybe that was an exaggeration.
However, recent news is pointing strongly in favor of a potential Aubameyang departure. Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke responded to the rumors immediately, but not at all in the typical “he’s going nowhere” way. Instead, he said the following (as quoted by Pundit Arena):
"“We can never believe that a club like Borussia Dortmund is dependent on a player. We are not dependent on anyone. When Robert Lewandowski left, we found [solutions] and he even has three more goals than Lewa. We are now so well positioned that we can offer alternative solutions again and again. [We want] our team to stay together. We do not have as much money as the top stars in the Premier League, but we have a lot of other things to offer. For example our players were able to celebrate Christmas."
Watzke therefore established the basis that there is essentially no one at Dortmund that they cannot do without. And in fact, it is almost like a personal crusade to continue to prove this fact. Citing the Lewandowski transfer as a beacon of what they can do is almost like pointing to Aubameyang and saying ‘take him, we can cope with any loss.’

To add a little fuel to this fire, Aubameyang missed out on training for ‘personal reasons’. That is the lesser of the two headlines, but it sure does get the cogs in the head turning.
Aubameyang would be an interesting addition. He is ripping apart the Bundesliga with goals galore. In terms of other skills that the Gabonese striker offers – he scores goals. That’s it. That’s his mantra.
It is a mantra that any club could use and from the sounds of it, several other clubs are in on it, including Liverpool, who have the added benefit of Jurgen Klopp.
I am guilty of writing off this rumor as nothing more than incredibly wishful thinking, but when considering the combination of Olivier Giroud and Aubameyang, it has to at least be remotely fantasized about. The speed/power combination is what was supposed to happen between Walcott and Giroud, but due to depth problems, injuries and inconsistency, it looks like it was just a temporary fad.

Aubameyang will not be a fad at Arsenal. I’m still not getting my hopes up and I would not encourage anyone else to get their hopes up. But this rumor definitely deserves one eye on it at all times. Until he returns to training at least.
