Arsenal Have Very Little To Fear From Chinese Super League
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has pointed out that the Premier League should fear Chinese money, but Arsenal may have absolutely nothing to worry about.
The Chinese Super League is on a Manchester United-esque spending spree. In the month of January, the newcomers to football outspent the birthplace of football as they lured the likes of Ramires, Alex Teixeira and Jackson Martinez into their midst.

That is definitely newsworthy, and Arsene Wenger has been quick to point out that the Premier League has a lot to fear from the newly established Chinese Super League. The league has only been in existence since 2004, but with President Xi Jinping making football and initiative in his country, it will grow in now time. As CNN reports:
“China wants to build the world’s biggest sport industry worth $850 billion by 2025 and part of that strategy is to host the World Cup and win it. To do that it needs to learn how to play football, so it’s now acquiring and developing assets to enable this.”

That’s a lot of money. Enough money to spent $20m over market value for players like Alex Teixeira. Arsene Wenger commented on this new-found threat: “China looks to have the financial power to move a whole league of Europe to China,” he said, as quoted by the Guardian.
To a certain extent he is absolutely right, as both Chelsea and Tottenham have lost out to players moving to the Chinese Super League. It also seems a rather ominous situation that Arsenal should have yet another competitor to make signings.
However, if you think about it, Arsenal has the least to fear from China. Forgive me if this sounds terribly corny, but Arsenal is different than other teams. They are a team build on loyalty and faith. It sounds even cornier saying it, but it is true. Not only that, but the players Arsenal pursue are not the type of players that are in this sport for the money.

Arsenal’s two biggest signings to date are Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil. Ozil came over for £43, and Alexis came over for £35m. That may be a lot of money. But the reasoning behind their transfer to Arsenal was not the fee that was paid. It was to learn under Arsene Wenger and be a part of the culture that Arsenal provided. Plus, the competition of the Premier League is a sustainable resource that will continue to draw the world’s best.
China may be able to filch away Premier League talent, but no player vital to Arsenal’s cause is going to leave the club they chose for a bigger paycheck in a league that still has very little competitive implications.

Arsene Wenger is right, China’s financial clout is something to fear and keep an eye on. But in the long run, Arsenal have very little to lose to the Chinese Super League. After all, when is the last time Arsenal bought a top quality player and left him on the bench to be disgruntled and lured away by higher wages?
