Arsenal Have To Make Concessions For Calum Chambers
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal witnessed a truly wonderful half of football from Calum Chambers and it is time that he gets some consistent play time. How can they make this happen?
I do not think I am alone in stating that I was 100% mortified when Calum Chambers came on at half time. Here Arsenal was, a goal down, looking flustered and at extreme risk to dip out of the title race and off goes the best defender in the Premier League. On comes a 21 year old utility man with a lack of pace.

Coupling him with Per Mertesacker was a disaster waiting to happen. Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy against Chambers and the BFG? That is not a battle I wanted to see.
However, it turned out to be a beautiful touch on a spectacular affair. While the game was won for Arsenal at the other end of the pitch, take care not to forget what Calum Chambers managed to do on the defensive end for Arsenal.

It was a matter of pelting the Foxes’ goal from the minute Danny Simpson was sent off. But that opened the door for counter attacks, also known as Chambers/BFG’s worst nightmare. Or so it would have seemed. That is not how it ended up.
Calum Chambers showed such tremendous composure at the back during these sporadic counter attacks. He shut down Mahrez before the Algerian was subbed off and he continued the trend against Jamie Vardy until that last whistle blew.
In fact, Chambers did so well that I am actually not convinced Koscielny could have done any better. Koscielny has a knack for lunging for the ball and while it normally comes off, Vardy and Mahrez are playing out of their minds right now and they could have feasibly outfoxed the Frenchman.
Chambers made no such attempts on the ball. He did not try to look a hero or do something magical. He just did his job. It seems rather silly to celebrate someone doing their job, but when that someone is an unproven 21 year old who doesn’t even really have a position yet, it absolutely needs to be celebrated.

Calum Chambers had noted not more than a few days ago that he needed to keep improving at Arsenal. It is quite clear that he is following through on that plan. Against Vardy, Chambers kept himself between the striker and the goal. He did not bite on any cute tricks or attempted step overs. He took the easiest route – slow him down. Help was always on the way, all he ever had to do was slow his countryman down.
This performance was a huge testament to the progress Chambers has made at Arsenal. The guy has made appearances at defensive midfield, center back and right back. While his future has always appeared to be at center back, finding consistent game time there has not been easy.
Following this performance, Arsene Wenger has to start making concessions to accommodate Chambers. I don’t want to see him get ‘lost in translation’ at Arsenal like the Ox sort of did. Reward his good play with some time in his favored position. He is proving that he is not a liability. If he can keep pace with Leicester’s counter attack, there is very little he can’t cope with.

Hopefully Chambers will get the run out against Hull City. He’s definitely earned it.
