Arsenal: No Record Is Safe From Mesut Ozil
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal are the proud owner of the record-hunter Mesut Ozil. If you are a record that stands in the Premier League, you had better watch yourself.
When Arsenal signed Mesut Ozil in 2013, it was kind of a big deal. The first major signing since the construction of the Emirates. It was a lovely day to be a Gooner. Finally Cesc Fabregas could be forgotten as Mesut Ozil would replace him in no time.

Well, it was not that easy. Life in the Premier League is a bit different than life in La Liga. While Ozil’s technical deftness and passing ability was a sensation at Real Madrid, it took some time to catch on in England.
The German maestro was frequently bullied off the ball at Arsenal and ended up looking frustrated and flustered. Then, last year, he was injured. During his time away from the pitch, Ozil made mention that he never wanted to be in that situation again. So he changed everything, from his sleeping habits to his diet. It was a complete overhaul.
He returned looking brand new. He returned looking like what was expected of him when he first arrived at the Emirates.

This Arsenal season is his first full season in that resurgent form and it is turning out to be one of the best seasons of any midfielder in Premier League history. Mesut Ozil is breaking records left and right and asserting himself into the Premier League annals.
The first record fell when Mesut Ozil achieved his tenth Premier League assist against Tottenham on August 11th. It made him the fastest player ever to accumulate ten assists.
The next record fell on November 21st as Mesut Ozil put together the longest streak of assists, contributing (at least) one in seven straight Premier League matches.
The next two records that are in Ozil’s sights are big ones. The first and most obvious is the assist record. Thierry Henry holds the record at 20, but Mesut Ozil already has 17 with twelve games left to play. All he has to do is contribute an assist every four games and he is in the clear.
To put that in perspective, Ozil has only gone four games without an assist once this season and that streak ended on the fifth game – at home to Leicester City.

Ozil has contributed 17 assists before, just not for Arsenal. He did it at Real Madrid two straight years – 2010/11 and 2011/12. He had thirty matches to do so in those seasons. Thus far into the EPL season, he has only played 24 games (via WhoScored).
The other record that stands to be broken is the chances created record currently held by Frank Lampard (134). The Mirror points out that Ozil has already eclipsed the best season Ryan Giggs and Steven Gerrard ever had in the chances created category and there are still those crucial 12 games left.
According to the Mirror’s mathematics, if Ozil keeps up the pace he is on (4.4 chances created per match), he will create 159 chances for Arsenal – well in the clear of what Lampard put up in 2008/9.

If there are any records left to be broken after those two fall, I’m sure Mesut Ozil will have no trouble finding them.
