Arsenal has been the home of Jack Wilshere since he was just a boy but he has yet to amount to his full potential. He is doing all he can to turn that around.

It’s not all that often that Jack Wilshere makes headlines several times in a season and it’s a good thing. Once known for appearing in swimming pools with cigarettes and alcohol, Wilshere is now popping up in training videos and going to games with five year olds.

I made the point not too long ago that it appears that our still-young Englishman has turned a corner. His off the pitch antics are no longer the source of scorn for supporters and coaches alike. Now he is aligning his priorities. That is god ju ju and hopefully it will mean a string of health to equal his string of good behavior.

Another aspect of Wilshere’s potential that has yet gone unfilled is his potential to be a leader. I ramble far too often about how Arsenal need a captain who is Arsenal through and through, who has been here, knows Arsenal and what it’s about and knows how to take the reigns and drive the team.

That person doesn’t exist. At least not year.

However, it that person were to exist, it looks like it would be Jack Wilshere. Wilshere recently had an exclusive interview with Arsenal Weekly and he may be of the same opinion.

In the interview, Wilshere stated that he has taken it upon himself to make Alex Iwobi feel comfortable amidst all the pressure associated with joining a club such as Arsenal.

“I don’t like to call it mentoring because Alex is 19 so he’s not a kid, but I know what it’s like for him because I’ve been there. You almost feel a little bit of responsibility, not to mentor him, but to steer him in the right direction,” Wilshere said.

He went on to point out that when he was in the same position, players like Cesc Fabregas came to him and taught him everything he needed to know about how to behave at the club. Of course, Fabregas was also the captain of the team. And a damn good one at that. Perhaps the last good captain this club has had.

Fabregas led by example, both on and off the pitch. He had an impeccable track record and it only made sense that young players would be naturally inclined to gravitate towards him. Now, Jack Wilshere is becoming that guy, having seen what a positive impact it can have on someone.

It’s just all positive signs from Wilshere. He is making the most out of a bad situation. His off the pitch actions are a stark contrast to what they used to be and his interactions within the club show a hunger for a bigger role.

If there is some natural balance of good things breeding good things and bad things breeding bad, then surely Jack Wilshere has done enough to earn a bit of good. Namely, good health.
