Arsenal have been tied to so many Neapolitan players recently but Napoli’s success has warded off the Gunners. Their misfortune is Arsenal’s gain, however.

There are some teams that are tied to Arsenal all the time in the transfer market. At any given moment, you can find at least three Borussia Dortmund, PSG and Napoli players rumored to be making the leap to Arsenal. Few of those moves every happen, but that won’t stop the rumors.

One of the main reasons why those rumors never push through is because these three teams are successful. Why would players ditch their team when that team is relevant in numerous European competitions and fighting for domestic glory? Makes little sense.

That being said, when one of those teams starts to tank, get ready for the rumors to hit the reset and start all over again.

Not saying that Napoli is tanking, but they are hanging out on a very unstable platform. Given a few more doses of the wrong kind of medicine and they may be on their way towards a downward spiral into Europa League contention.

Napoli held top of the Serie A table just about all year. They were proving to be a powerhouse in football as their offense was simply unstoppable. However, ever since Juventus decided to not let any more goals in, the Turin side came back and took top spot, dropping Napoli 1-0. It was not the end of the world, but Napoli are going about like it might have been.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Since that time, Napoli has drawn to AC Milan and been dumped out of the Europa League by Spanish side Villareal. Their offense is not scoring as many goals and it is worrying times. Again, it’s nothing they can’t recover from, but with third-place Fiorentina coming up next, Napoli is in prime contention to continue their frustrations.

They currently sit five points ahead of Fiorentina and seven ahead of Roma. A loss to Fiorentina lets blood into the water. The sharks will be swarming.

Arsenal has to be sitting by at the ready to drop a few tantalizing words in some Neapolitan player’s ears. Over the past couple years they have been tied to Gonzalo Higuain, Lorenzo Insigne, Jorginho, Faouzi Ghoulam and even Marek Hamsik. These players have remained loyal to Napoli, but another disappointing season may be enough for some of them to call it quits.

Although, when you really get down to it, the only transfer that would be sensible, from an Arsenal standpoint, is Insigne. However, the man is a Neapolitan through and through and won’t be easily coerced away. Higuain is an interesting proposition, but his price tag is out of this world.

Jorginho still appeals to me, even with the addition of Mohamed Elneny. The Brazilian is a central midfielder that can play defensively or straight out centrally. Even the prospect of him being able to play defensively is enough for me to enjoy the idea of him coming to Arsenal.

The collapse isn’t complete, but Napoli have to be monitored. They are skating on some thin ice.
