Arsenal: Serge Aurier Eliminates Himself From Contention
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal have been tied to Serge Aurier before, however this time around the circumstances are a bit different and the Gunners may steer clear… Again.
There are several ways to ensure that you don’t end up at Arsenal. One of those ways is to tell Arsenal that you want to play for them. For some reason, that just seems to always end up with a blank. William Carvalho, Moussa Sissoko and the man of the hour, Serge Aurier, have all in some way or another, told Arsenal to come get them.

And Arsenal did not.
The other way to ensure that you don’t end up at Arsenal is to have problems in the dressing room or even off the pitch. Andre Pierre-Gignac, Mario Balotelli and the man of the hour, Serge Aurier, have all in some way or another, had scuffles with their team mates or problems off the pitch.
In each situation it has ended up with either a prolonged nothingness from Arsenal’s transfer interest or it has ended up with the speculation going nowhere. Aurier is like the double negative. Which, I guess you could speculate would make him a positive, but no one is a mathematician here.
Not only that, but Aurier plays a position of little need at Arsenal. In fact, probably the position of least need: right back. Arsenal is rocking out with arguably the most promising right back in the world of football with Hector Bellerin and anyone challenging for his throne will be sorely disappointed.
But that does not mean no one is. Calum Chambers and Carl Jenksinon (when he returns) will be competitors for Bellerin and Debuchy too, although the likelihood of him returning is slim to none.
Aurier is a very proficient defender, but between the recent negative publicity from PSG and the position he plays, it seems rather unlikely that Arsenal would waste their time going after a luxury that is in no way needed.
However, the one option that we have not considered is the option of Aurier shifting positions for Arsenal. As everyone knows, another defensive midfielder would be a nice addition and while Aurier is no defensive midfielder, that’s not to say he couldn’t be. With superb athleticism, tackling and intercepting rate and an added benefit of offensive prowess, Aurier could make it as a midfielder. He has, after all, played right midfield before.

Yet, by that token, he almost eliminates himself more because Wenger will seemingly never by a defensive midfielder. Of course, by being a right back that turns into a defensive midfielder, Wenger may be able to psyche himself around his mysterious rule.
