Arsenal have made a habit of picking and choosing from Barcelona’s mass of youth talents and it looks like they may land yet another in striker Abel Ruiz.

Once upon a time, Arsenal had a fantastic academy. They were responsible for churning out some serious talents that could hold the team together all on their own. Now, Arsenal has just as many players in their regular starting XI from Barcelona’s academy as they do from their own (1).

And that number may skew in Barcelona’s favor if Jon Toral can latch on to a role in the near future.

That number may be even more skewed if Arsenal can secure the signing of 16 year old wonderkid Abel Ruiz. The Metro is reporting that Chelsea and Arsenal are both in on the young striker as Barcelona’s cluttered masses remain unable to maintain every single product that enters their establishment.

There’s no reason not to like the prospect. Anytime ‘wonderkid’ and ‘striker’ are used in the same sentence, it must be in a link to Arsenal. As it stands, Giroud is alone in his pursuits as a center forward and Arsene Wenger is absolutely never going to provide him with any semblance of competition.

So in loading up on youngsters, Wenger is trying to be proactive. Prevent a situation like this from happening in the future. By adding Donyell Malen and Yassin Fortune to Stephy Mavididi, the intentions were clear. Never again leave Arsenal in a situation where they only have one legitimate striker.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

It is the best Wenger can do, seeing as how he is allergic to signing a big name striker. So for that, he deserves a bit of credit.

Abel Ruiz is a talented young man who recently made his debut for the Spain U16 side, where he has now made three appearances and netted a goal. Since joining from Valencia, he has been one of the most talked about strikers in the Catalans.

Given the success rate that Arsenal have going with their Barcelona products (see: Hector Bellerin and soon to be Jon Toral) it is only natural that they want to go back for seconds, thirds or even fifths. After all, Barcelona has somewhat steered away from internal promotions, as they have instead been opting for big money deals just like their rivals from the capital.

All this means is that there is a fountain of youth that Arsenal will continue to prey on so long as they are producing living, breathing athletes.
