Arsenal’s star players are loved by their fans, but the club’s recent skid might lead them to look elsewhere in the summer window. Will they take new deals?

Arsenal’s current squad has been described as “the best, talent-wise” by fans and pundits alike this season, and thus people have been shocked by the Gunners’ dip in form. That crash in form has led to them crashing out of all competitions in the winter period, and them falling behind in the Premier League title race.

The arrivals of Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and Petr Cech in recent transfer windows have been positive signs as far as ambition goes. All three of those players have won major trophies, all three of them were passionate about joining the Arsenal and fighting for a title shot.

As the season has worn on, we have seen Mesut Ozil continually produce for his team, at times winning the three points on his own and at other times simply dictating the game when he wants to. We have also seen Petr Cech get an injury and Alexis Sanchez struggle for form for long periods of the season.

Even though Sanchez has looked out of sorts in recent months, he has made important plays, like his equalizer against Tottenham Hotspur. However, the Chilean will no doubt be astounded by his teammates’ inability to pick up the slack.

As will Ozil, for that matter. Arsenal were finishing in third and fourth place without these two star attacking midfielders, and now that they are a part of the squad the players who were at the Emirates prior to their arrivals have failed to produce in the same way.

All these players I’ve just mentioned – such as Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ramsey – can do is play to some “standard” that they’ve set themselves, and hope Ozil and Sanchez do the rest.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

As Christopher Simpson made clear in his Bleacher Report article discussing a similar issue, all of these things discussed might be swirling around in Ozil’s head and Sanchez’s head. Not only that, clubs from overseas have more than likely made contact with each players’ agents in a hope to draw them away from struggling Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger has made clear this week that he is very interested in tying these two stars down to new deals before the summer window opens. However, is it even possible at this point?

Perhaps if the Gunners boss had done this a few months ago when the Gunners were in good form, it would have been done with facility. But, now it is the middle of March, and aside from Ozil the ‘best players’ within the team have been switching every match – that’s just how inconsistent these Gunners have been.

More rumors have persisted about a summer clear-out happening in 2016, and as many as nine players – on some lists, even players like Giroud and Mertesacker have been included – have been picked to be sold in the upcoming window.

Frankly, there’s no way Arsene Wenger sells more than three members of his current squad, especially not players that he has ended up relying on due to his hesitancy in the transfer market. In fact, if there are players that go, they could be for big money, and they could be Arsenal’s stars.
