Arsenal are linked to Jose Mourinho, despite the Portuguese link to Manchester United. Is that really the best idea that we can come up with?

There is a rather nasty rumor going around that Arsenal are looking at Jose Mourinho as a managerial replacement. Well, at least Piers Morgan likes this idea. But we know how those things normally go.

Let’s get something out of the way – Jose Mourinho is a horrible idea for Arsenal and there is very little logic in appointing him, unless they cared nothing for the lasting legacy of the club, let alone Arsene Wenger, who has established quite a culture at Arsenal, even given his decade of lesser successes.

Jose Mourinho is a fine manager and he is a winner. But there is a reason he only holds down jobs for so long. He has bounced around the world and collected so many accolades, but he has never gone to a team to build a culture. I see the logic most people see in Mourinho – he wins. Arsenal has not won, so bring in Mourinho and he will end the major trophy drought. That’s the idea, at least.

But this is a horrible idea. Mourinho was Arsenal’s public enemy No. 1. Someone that Arsene Wenger never got a long with. No matter what ill-feelings supporters have towards Wenger, nothing can be taken away from what he has done at this club. No, he didn’t build the club, but he built a legacy. He brought Arsenal so many major trophies and completely improved so many things.

It may be true that Wenger is trapped in the past and that he has yet to adjust to the way football is now, but to replace him with Jose Mourinho would be to spit on his legacy, and he does not deserve that by any means. He has built something wonderful at Arsenal. Something about seeing all of these wonderkids that Wenger has accumulated playing for the Special One makes me twitch.

Not only that, but Mourinho is historically known for taking coaching jobs for his own personal gain. It’s like what Van Gaal is doing at United right now. Managers should have an emotional connection to the club, that is one thing Wenger has. He loves this club and despite what you may hear about him only wanting money, take nothing away from Wenger’s love for the club. All of his dedication has cost him in his personal life. So much so that he lives for this club.

He is not purposely running the club into the ground, he is not taking his paychecks to the bank and laughing all the way. He loses just as much sleep as anyone else when his collection of superstars can’t put a goal in the net.

Jose Mourinho does not have that with any club. Chelsea was his best chance but that has now failed him twice. He would not have that at Arsenal. Think of the rift that Mourinho caused at Chelsea when he left. That would happen at Arsenal too. Give it a few years.

Arsenal need a long-term solution that fits in with the culture of the club. If they want to revamp the culture, that is fine, but they need someone that will be around long enough to build upon that culture. Jose Mourinho could never provide that.

Temporary solutions rarely have long term benefits. Piers Morgan is off his rocker again.
