Arsene Wenger Can Give Arsenal Massive Lift
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal’s season is essentially over, but there is one last thing that Arsenal have to do in order to make turn this season into a positive.
Every article I’ve written lately has began the same way. “Arsenal is done… but…” It’s very sobering. Arsenal really did blow this season massively. They completely crapped out in a year that was seemingly made for them. And there they sit, in third place, 13 points removed from Leicester and six removed from Tottenham, albeit with a game in hand.

A title is everything but impossible. But one thing that has to be made a priority is not impossible – catching Tottenham.
In Arsene Wenger’s existence at Arsenal, the Gunners have never finished below their North London rivals. The Spurs are synonymous with being the step child of North London, compared to Arsenal’s prodigal son. This is one last, massive lift that Arsene Wenger can give us going into next year.

Second place is no trophy, but catching the Spurs is a trophy – one of pride.
The Spurs schedule is not the most menacing. Assuming Arsenal take three points from the game in hand, that will mean Arsenal need two separate instances of dropped points, as the goal differential will not be overturned. That is a scary proposition.
The Spurs remaining matchups see them facing Stoke City, West Brom, Chelsea, Southampton and Newcastle. That means they will be facing four mid-table teams that have little to play for. And Newcastle.
At times like this, those middle of the pack teams provide the easiest points. Relegation is not encroaching and European football is not realistic either. So they set it to cruise control and ride out the season. Tottenham still has everything to play for, so their hunger is going to be in full swing.

That being said, some of these teams give me optimism. Stoke City is an odd team that can hang with just about anyone – plus they will be at home. There is reason to be hopeful for a draw. West Brom doesn’t bring much to the table, especially not at White Hart Lane.
Chelsea is another team that gives me optimism. They may have written off their season, but Chelsea can be a nuisance (just ask Arsenal). I don’t see Southampton causing any problems either.
But Newcastle. Newcastle is a wildcard. right in the thick of the relegation battle. Newcastle will close out their season by welcoming Tottenham to their humble abode. If a win gets them out of being dropped, then the Magpies may be the heroes of Arsenal’s season, giving the Gunners the opportunity they need to pass Tottenham.
