Arsenal were tied to Karim Benzema for far too long and agonizingly didn’t nab the Frenchman. Now, it’s time for Benzema transfer talk, chapter two.

I won’t lie. I was fooled by the Benzema transfer talk last summer. While it never received the rarely seen Pain in the Arsenal stamp of approval (like Granit Xhaka did), it was still a highly believable rumor. If you were to tell me that Benzema had actually just been pranking Arsenal the entire time, I would believe you. That is what it felt like. All signs pointed to Benzema coming to Arsenal, yet in the end, all the believers were made to feel rather stupid.

Expect more of the same this summer, only with more hope attached to the impending sorrow. The rumors have already started, as supposedly Real Madrid will be looking to land another overwhelmingly unattainable Arsenal targer – Robert Lewandowski. Landing the Polish striker would free up Benzema to pursue life away from Los Blancos and given that Arsenal have been nipping at his heels since his very conception, it makes sense that they could be ready and waiting.

The thing with Benzema is that, no matter how frustrated he gets at European exclusions and not playing the full 90 minutes, like ever, he is still so damn good that Real Madrid would have to be slightly out of their mind to just sell him for no good reason.

Benzema has scored 28 goals in 34 appearances this year. And yet somehow he still flies under the radar, as Ronaldo and Bale consistently steal the show. However, Benzema’s confidence is a right monster and it would take a massive payday to lure him away, assuming he could even  get lured away.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

With Danny Welbeck’s injury, which could keep him out indefinitely, Giroud’s cold streak and the complete and utter irrelevance of Theo Walcott, Arsenal need a striker. Worse than ever, arguably, as they currently, even when fully fit, have no bonafide, consistent goal scorers.

That is precisely what Karim Benzema is. It’s all he’s ever done – score goals. Envisioning Benzema taking balls from Alexis and Ozil is enough to drive even a casual Arsenal fan clinically insane, mainly because we know it is incredibly unlikely. Wenger has tricks up his sleeve though. Alexis and Ozil were two of those tricks. With just one season left on his tenure, he could do something crazy.

Again though, the big question is if Benzema would want to get away. He has had yet another marvelous year, yet his off-the-pitch troubles have spoiled what could have been pure perfection. Not only that, but he will be left out of France’s National Team as they defend the homeland in Euro 2016. Maybe after all that, he will be looking for a palate cleanser.

Not to mention the fact that I still love the idea of Benzema and Giroud teaming up at Arsenal.
