Arsenal are reportedly in talks with an undisclosed striker. Could it be Jamie Vardy, and what impact would the Leicester striker have on the team?

It is well and truly transfer rumor season, and there have been plenty to excite Arsenal fans. Not only have Arsenal been linked with some of the very best players available throughout Europe, they have also been downtrodden by reports that they are interested in the likes of Moussa Sissoko.

One such fanatical rumor is that Arsenal are in talks with an undisclosed striker not named Alvaro Morata. Well known Arsenal insider @AFCAMDEN states that Arsenal are in talks to sign a striker other than Alvaro Morata.

When this is combined with reports that Arsenal could sign Jamie Vardy, then all of a sudden, there is a slim, but perhaps, real possibility that Arsenal could be interested Premier League’s second top goal scorer.

This is most likely fan rumors that have little to no substantiated basis. However, there is a story here, and as the old adage goes, there’s no smoke without fire. Don’t for one second hold your breath with the expectation that Jamie Vardy is coming to the Emirates, however, it is fun to hope and dream that Arsenal could secure such a signing this Summer.

For the sake of dreaming, let’s question how Vardy would fit in the Arsenal side. Would he immediately supplant Olivier Giroud as the number one striking option? Would he be bought as an impact sub? Do Arsenal need a 29 year old who has most likely seen his best days gone, even with his late development?

More from Pain in the Arsenal

These are all merited questions to ask, and there is not a clear answer to any of them. Vardy would likely want assurances of regular first team football, and as we saw through the season with the performances of Theo Walcott early on and Danny Welbeck in the past month or so, Arsenal’s system suits a striker who possesses pace to run in behind.

That is certainly a major strength of Vardy. He is absolutely electric. However, unlike Welbeck and Walcott, he is lethal in front of goal, and playing in front of a cast starring Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, you would expect Vardy to have lots of chances come his way.

Whether you believe Arsenal need him or not most likely depends on your evaluation of Giroud. I have set my stall out on Giroud. After evaluating the past winners of the Premier League, it is clear to me that a top goalscorer is needed to win the league. Giroud is not that man. Jamie Vardy, though? Well, he is a natural born goalscorer, and pairing him with Giroud would provide Arsenal with a variation of talents in the striking partnership.

While the transfer of Vardy seems like a pipe dream, for me, he would be undoubtedly an upgrade on what is available right now and would be the type of move to win Arsenal the Premier League. If this unlikely yet unbelievable deal was to be completed, I for one, would be having a party.
