Arsenal’s pipe dream of landing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang may be becoming less and less pipely. Rumors suggest he is preparing for his next club. But is it Arsenal?

Arsenal need a striker. And if reports are to be believed, they are in talks to sign a center forward. However, it is a mystery forward that is not Alvaro Morata. That being the case, the options are limited. It could be Arek Milik. It could be Antoine Griezmann. It could be Aubameyang.

No really, it could be Aubameyang.

The Gabonese striker has supposedly made his future very clear. “Aubameyang has asked not to be selected because he is changing clubs,” said Gabon manager Jorge Costa.

Seems pretty obvious to me.

Also, supposedly Arsenal have officials at Borussia Dortmund’s headquarters.

While I may be secretly wishing in my head that they are there for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, there is a very distinct chance that they are feeling out the availability of the Gabonese hit man, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

I have been a constant dissenter of this rumor. Why would he want to come to Arsenal, first of all? He is Dortmund’s batman. They are giving him everything he could want and they are back into the Champions League. All is well and good right?

Perhaps not, if he has made it this obvious that he is switching clubs.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

40 goals in 47 combined appearances. 26 years old. Pretty cool stat line. However, the parts that have me a bit hesitant are his passing inabilities and his lack of defensive contributions. Aubameyang is there for one reason – to score goals.

That’s a cool thing to be good at, and Arsenal could use it. But how likely is it that Wenger is open to spending £60m on a complimentary striker that isn’t a good passer and isn’t going to contribute defensively. Wouldn’t he just turn into a supersub?

Aubameyang is exactly what Arsenal wanted Theo Walcott to be. But again. £60m is a lot of money just to correct the mistake that was Theo Walcott. And it’s not like Arsenal is built to accommodate someone of Aubameyang’s skill set. He doesn’t hold up play. He would be incredibly useful on quick counter strikers, like he is at Dortmund, but again, that’s not how Arsenal play.

I like to think that Wenger is poking around in Germany to feel out how viable landing Aubameyang is. But we have to connect the dots and think that it isn’t the best fit for Wenger and his Arsenal vision.
