There is a huge debate among the Arsenal spheres. What should the Gunners do with Arsene Wenger? However, Mesut Ozil’s recent comments show that the club would be mad to let their legendary coach go.

Arsene Wenger is one of the greatest managers of all time. That much is certain. However, he has undoubtedly struggled over the past decade to bring success to Arsenal.

Whether such struggles are Wenger’s fault is unclear. There were clear financial restrictions that Wenger had to work under in the transfer window, his best players were consistently departing each and every season, and he was unable to inspire his side to consistently challenge for the Premier League title, often settling for a top four position and Champions League qualification.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Such poor performances over the past decade have led many to believe that the time has come for Arsenal to move on from Wenger, and now, there is a raging debate among Arsenal circles between the pro and anti Wenger groups.

There are valid points from both sides of the argument, and it is certainly a complex issue. However, Mesut Ozil’s recent comments strongly support the quality of Arsene Wenger, even with his recent issues. Ozil stated:

"“At Arsenal, Arsène Wenger has shown that he is one of the best managers in history. He has revolutionised the club and created magnificent success. I am proud and aware of the luxury I have of working for such a coach. His simple discourse immediately seduced me when I was asking questions about my future in the summer of 2013. He chose the perfect words to convince me. The great strength that Wenger has is he knows how to talk to his players.”"

While a player’s comments should never dictate whether a club should keep their manager or not, they should have a degree of weighting on the discussion. Mesut Ozil is clearly a huge supporter of Wenger and most likely would never have joined the club without Wenger’s influence.

Ozil’s support of his manager proves that Wenger is still respected by the squad. He still has authority over the team and the players are still willing to play for their manager. Wenger has been terrific for Arsenal, both in the early years and in more recent seasons, and although the Premier League title drought is frustrating, Le Professeur should be backed to bring the trophy back to the Emirates.
