Arsenal have been linked with Everton forward Romelu Lukaku in recent weeks, however, the big Belgian would be exactly the wrong type of signing for the Gunners.

Let me state this first and foremost. Romelu Lukaku is a quality player. He is an athletic freak, incredibly strong, possesses good pace and is a threat in all facets of the game. He is a proven goalscorer at the Premier League level at a variety of clubs and has the physical tools to handle English football.

He is also most definitely available this Summer. While he would likely cost north of £30 million, this is not a figure that Arsenal couldn’t afford, if they so wanted the player, and he is most certainly in search of Champions League football, something that Everton can certainly not either next season or likely in the next few seasons. Consequently, Lukaku is a quality player, who is affordable and is wanting to leave the club. What’s not to like?

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Well, Arsenal have a very specific style of play. The central striker must possess one of two key attributes, either a great touch and hold up ability, or searing pace to spin in behind. Lukaku has neither of these. His touch is why he was ultimately sold by Jose Mourinho and Chelsea. As the central striker in a team that is going to dominate possession, being able to keep hold of the ball and bring others into play is an essential part of the role, something that Lukaku struggles greatly with.

Secondly, while he is fast, for his size, he cannot match the pace of a Walcott or Welbeck, two players who Wenger has trusted in the central role this past season. Lukaku is the prime example of a talented player gaining hype through fans and the media when his style of play doesn’t suit Arsenal.

While he is a talented player, he simply isn’t the right player for the Gunners. It’s time for Arsenal to be selective about what players they bring in. Lukaku is not the right player for Arsenal. However, attractive the name may be, he is simply not the right man for the job.
